In the suggestive landscape of the Calanchi di Cannizzola, located in the municipality of Centuripe, in the Sicilian hinterland, the scene of the journey that the Salina family undertakes to escape the torrid heat of Palermo and reach the village of Donnalucata was filmed.
In the suggestive cobbled streets and in the splendid Piazza del Duomo of Syracuse, on the island of Ortigia, and in the main square of the small village of Ciminna, in the province of Palermo, the scenes set in the village of Donnafugata were filmed.
The splendid halls of Palazzo Biscari in Catania were chosen as the location for the famous scene of the Liberation Ball. Other scenes were filmed outside.
Many interior scenes were filmed in Rome, between Palazzo Chigi and Villa Parisi, in Turin between the National Museum of the Risorgimento and the Chamber of Deputies of the Subalpine Parliament. Other scenes were filmed in Cottanello, a municipality in the province of Rieti.
