In the ruins of Poggioreale, destroyed by the earthquake in 1968, some scenes of the film "Man of the stars" were shot.
The Man of the Stars is a 1995 film directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. The film earned a 1996 Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It sees as protagonists Sergio Castellitto, in the role of Joe Morelli, and the then newcomer Tiziana Lodato in the role of Beata and the contribution of established actors also in the supporting roles.
The film is about an imposter goes around Sicily pretending to being a cinema agent looking for new talents, inviting people to audition for 1500 lire, promises fame and money.
The film was shot in Sicily, mainly, between Ragusa Ibla and Monterosso Almo. The initial scenes were shot in Matera. Other scenes were shot in the Gangi Vecchio abbey, at the Grotte della Gurfa and in the ruins of Poggioreale.
In the ruins of Poggioreale the scene with The bombed city square is shot where Joe Morelli will audition the fake noble and a his wife who will rob him of everything.
