The miracle of the head of San Giovanni in Monterosso Almo
In Monterosso Almo, some tales and legends are linked to the cult of San Giovanni Battista.
Among these stories, the most vivid in the faith of the inhabitants of Monterosso Almo is the head miracle of San Giovanni Battista. It is said that, once upon a time, the simulacrum of San Giovanni Battista was found headless. An elderly man with a cane stepped out of the outraged crowd and promised to rebuild the head of St. John in just three days on the condition that he could work undisturbed. He also asked for bread and wine so that he could feed himself and a bed to rest.
The three days passed the faithful entered the church and with astonishment found all the bread and all the wine, the bed intact and never used, and none trace of man. The simulacrum of San Giovanni Battista had instead been reassembled and enriched by a slight smile.
Another story that is told by the faithful of Monterosso Almo is the miracle of the stick. In fact, it is said that the stick of the simulacrum was used by St. John the Baptist to knock on the door of the chapel in the year in which the faithful had neglected the triduum of the saint and had not even revealed the simulacrum. It is said that it was children who heard the blows of the stick who immediately went to warn the guardian of the church.
