Origin of the name "Chiaramonte Gulfi"
The name "Chiaramonte Gulfi" is linked to the history of this ancient village and to the illustrious Chiaramonte family.
The ancient town of Gulfi was founded in the XII-XIII century and was later destroyed in 1299 by the Angevins. Only following the intervention of the Count of Modica Manfredi I Chiaramonte was the town then refounded a century later and inhabited by the few who survived the Gulfi massacre. The village took the name of the count's family: Chiaramonte. The name of the ancient center of Gulfi will be added to the official name of the municipality only in 1881, as a reminder of the ancient origin of the town.
