Origin of the name Isola dei Conigli
Historically, the origin of the name Rabbit Island is linked to a British naval officer, Admiral Smith.
In fact, in 1824, he called for the first time the islet off the current Spiaggia dei Conigli, Rabit Island.
It is believed that the admiral wanted to use the Arabic term Rabit, which can be translated as connection, referring to an isthmus that connected the islet to the coast. In subsequent cartographies this toponym was improperly translated from the English rabbit into rabbit, the addition of this b transformed this place into the beach and into the rabbit island.
