The term Campobello derives from the Latin campus belli which means battlefield.
The territory where Campobello di Mazara stands today was in fact the scene of bloody clashes between the two great rival cities of Segesta and Selinunte, before the latter was destroyed by Hannibal in 409 BC.
The bloody battle between Selinuntini and Segestani, the the subsequent destruction of Selinunte and the succession of strong earthquakes led the inhabitants of the various farmhouses scattered throughout the countryside to abandon the entire area.
Under the Roman Empire this territory was always called campus belli > and only with the affirmation of the vernacular language and then of the Italian one, the name was changed to Campobello. To avoid homonymy with other towns, Mazara was added, given the proximity to this city, the main neighboring centre.
