The name of the city of - Canicattini Bagni - is of Arabic origin although its etymology is uncertain.
A first hypothesis derives the term Canicattini from the word Handaq – at – tin, i.e. Mud ditch.
A second interpretation derives the term from the union of the words Yhan or Ayn, i.e. Fountain, and the adjective Niatinum or Netinum, i.e. Netina, and to indicate the fountain that flows in the territory of Noto, with reference to the source of the Cardinal river.
The appositive Bagni, which does not indicate the presence of spas, is derived from the title of the Bagni fiefdom, which stood near the town, and which was imposed by Mario Daniele Partexano, re-founder of Canicattini.
