Various hypotheses have been formulated regarding the origin of the name - Limina.
A first hypothesis maintains that the term Limina derives from the Greek term limne which means swamp, in reference to the marshy lands present around the Agrò stream. The second hypothesis, the most accredited, derives the term Limina from the Latin term limen, i.e. boundary or limit , in reference to the fact that this territory represented the border point between the districts of Messina and that of Taormina.
