There are two hypotheses that explain the possible origin of the name - Mineo -
The first hypothesis holds that the name Mineo derives from the Latin term Menae-arum, which continues the Greek Menainon and the Sicilian Menai< /em>. A term which, according to a hypothesis dating back to the 19th century, indicates a soldiers' camp.
A second, more recent hypothesis connects the Sicilian term Menai to the pre-Indo-European substratum. It is believed that it may derive from the Basque term mendi, i.e. monte. In fact, it has been observed that this element is present in other toponyms of Sicily, and in general of southern Italy, such as in Taormina.
