The roots of the name - Petrosino - are shrouded in history and legend
There are two legends that tell of a possible origin of this name.
A first legend is linked to the figure of Saint Peter the Apostle. It is said that the apostle, on one of his journeys between Rome and Jerusalem, found shelter from a storm in the bay of Biscione. For this reason it is believed that the term Petrosino may derive from the Latin terms Sinus, meaning gulf, and Petri, meaning Peter, to indicate that this bay was the Gulf of Peter.
A popular story instead derives the term Petrosino from the Greek word Petrosilion, i.e. a The aromatic herb that was once said to be very widespread in these lands, Petroselinum crispum, better known by the name of parsley. Petrosilion in dialect became Piddusinu, from which Petrosino.
