The origin of the name - Piraino - is shrouded in myth and legend.
The term Piraino derives from the name of the Cyclops Pyracmon, a character from Greek mythology, son of Uranus and Gaea. According to mythology, Piracmon, whose name means "burning anvil", had two brothers, Sterope, meaning "lightning", and Bronte, meaning "thunder", masters of working iron in the service of the god Vulcan.
