Legendary origins of Scicli coat of arms

The origin of the coat of arms of the city of Scicli is traced back to the mythological figure of the hero Hercules.
It is known from mythology that Hercules passed from Sicily during his tenth labor: after having taken possession of the red oxen of the giant Geryon, he brought these to the island. The legend of the origin of the Scicli coat of arms tells that Hercules, during his passage in Sicily, sculpted a lion with a crown and hardly decipherable effigies on a plaque found near the "Torre dei Tre Cantoni", also known as "Castelluccio" di Scicli.
This effigy bears a feline, a symbol linked to Hercules, in the act of climbing three hills that represent the three promontories of the city. Scicli is in fact situated in a wide valley between rocky hills, at the confluence of three valleys: that of San Bartolomeo, that of Santa Maria La Nova and the river of Modica.
