Scotz: the ancient Sicilian dance
Scotz is an ancient Sicilian dance that is danced in Aidone during the Carnival.
It is a very ancient figurative dance, which can be danced in single couples or all together with a game of exchanging couples, turning and jumping. The music of the scotz resembles that of the polka. Handed down from generation to generation, it is considered by some scholars to be one of the oldest Sicilian dances that once must have been spread throughout the island. Today traces of it remain in very few towns such as Aidone, Petralia and Gangi.
