The majestic Church of Santa Margherita is the largest in the diocese and dates back to the first half of the 13th century.
It was rebuilt following the earthquake of 1693 by the most important Sicilian architects of the second half of the 18th century including Giovanni Battista Vaccarini and Stefano Ittar.
The church has a majestic neoclassical façade built at the end of the 19th century.
The interior, with a Latin cross shape, is divided into three naves by two orders of columns surmounted by Corinthian-style capitals. < br> Among the works kept inside the church, of particular artistic value are: the high altar, from the 17th century entirely covered with gold on glass miniatures; the six small columns supporting the dome of the small temple in Sicilian marble; the table in Egyptian granite and the table cross in agate; the very valuable statue of the altar by the Neapolitan Giuseppe Picano from 1787; noteworthy are some paintings of the seventeenth century, including the Misericordia of the Neapolitan school of the mid-century, St. Mary Magdalene of the Venetian school and the Addolorata and the four Evangelists by Ovidio Sozzi; the Renaissance-style wooden choir by Giovan Battista Li Volsi and his son Stefano; the wooden pulpit carved with the statues of the patron saints of the parishes of Agira, made in the early twentieth century; the eighteenth-century portal in Baroque style, through which you enter the sacristy; the cupboards of the sacristy artistically sculpted by Paolo Guglielmazzi of Enna in the second half of the 18th century.
