Church of San Giovanni in Aidone

The Church of San Giovanni in Aidone is an ancient and important place of worship in the village.
It was built in 1229 by concession of Emperor Frederick II, originally for the Order of the Templars and subsequently, after the expulsion and condemnation of the Templars as heretics, for the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, later of Rhodes and, finally, of Malta. The presence of the Order is evidenced by the coats of arms that crown the portal and by the repetition of the Maltese cross.
The simple façade is characterised by an imposing bell tower. The façade is characterised by the two-tone portal and bell tower made from alternating white and red local stone.
The interior, with a single nave, is devoid of decorative elements. Worthy of note is a side altar in mixed marble, placed under a fresco with an image of the Virgin Mary.
