Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Licodia Eubea
The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Licodia Eubea is located in the northern part of the town, in the ancient district of Ariceddi, next to the factories of the Capuchin convent.
The church, although small in size, is among the more beautiful and better preserved than the churches in the area.
It was built in 1568 together with the adjacent Capuchin convent.
The small church has a single nave. Inside the church there are works of considerable artistic value: an inlaid and carved wooden case placed on the main altar, a work of the XVIII century; an inlaid wooden frame that frames a canvas of 1676, depicting the Pardon of Assisi, the work of the local painter Mariano Cusmano; the wooden statue of the Assumption, carried in procession on August 15th of each year; the precious wooden statue of San Francesco d'Assisi, a work datable to the 17th century, of particular artistic value.
The church also houses the mortal remains and tombstones of some members of the noble family of Santapau and Ruffo, benefactors of the Capuchins and lords of Licodia. At the convent there is also a small oil portrait on canvas of Don Gutterra Velasquez and Santapau, Camilla and Don Pedro Velasquez's first bed.
