Necropolis of San Cono in Licodia Eubea
The Necropolis of San Cono in Licodia Eubea, located on the hill of San Cono to the east of the inhabited center, presents a large number of important testimonies.
In this site traces of an Eneolithic period village with ceramic remains have been identified undecorated achroma, millstones and an abundant lithic industry. In addition, two tombs were discovered: one with a round pit, of the Neolithic type, and the other of the oven type with a vertical well typical of the Metal Age.
The hill was frequented at least up to the Byzantine period and its presence testifies of a Christian-Byzantine necropolis. The necropolis is made up of sub-star tombs originally covered by large monolithic limestone slabs, each of which contained several burials. In the same site a Sicilian burial ground of lesser entity than the Christian one was also identified. From the data collected it is assumed the presence of a village, partly troglodyte, located on the plateau.
