Church of Spasimo in Militello in Val di Catania
The Church of the Madonna dello Spasimo in Militello in Val di Catania, also known as the Church of Santa Maria dello Spasimo, is an ancient place of worship in the village.
The date of construction of the original building is unknown but it is certain that it already existed in 1517. Originally the church was just a rock chapel located in the upper part of the city, along the ancient road that connected Militello to Mineo, Vizzini and Caltagirone. In 1568 the current building was built a short distance from the ancient chapel. It is one of the few damaged by the earthquake of 1693.
The simple gabled façade has a valuable carved portal made by local craftsmen in the eighteenth century. Next to the structure is a bell gable with a pointed arch.
The interior is decorated with valuable eighteenth-century stucco and houses the simulacra of the Addolorata and the Madonna dell'Aiuto.
