Church of Maria SS.ma d'Itria in Piazza Armerina
The Church of Maria SS.ma d'Itria in Piazza Armerina is a historic sacred building in the city.
It was built between 1500 and the early 1600s.
The sandstone facade has a valuable portal in Baroque style, and a bell tower made with raw bricks.
The interior, with a basic plan with an irregular square-shaped apse, has a nave enriched by four columns with a circular section. On the side walls there are niches, decorated with pilasters, capitals, gold and zinc braids, inside which are placed the statues of San Francesco di Paola, of the Madonna of Odigitria with the Child and a plaster statue dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Of particular value is the high altar in carved wood and silver, surmounted by a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. In fact, the church was the sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima for many years.
