Church of San Martino di Tours in Piazza Armerina
The Church of San Martino di Tours was the first Mother Church of the city until the current mother church dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore was built.
It was built in 1163 and is the first church built after the destruction of the city which took place in 1161.
In its structure the signs of two distinct architectural tendencies are evident: one from the late Middle Ages and one from the Renaissance. Few structures remain on the right side of the late medieval period, in the two ogival side portals with pointed arches and on the left side of the facade.
The facade was completely remodeled between the 16th and 17th centuries and has a portal in Renaissance style.
The interior, with a single nave, has a large apsidal transept.
Inside the church there are some works of notable artistic value: the baptismal font and the 19th century wooden coffered ceiling.
