Church of Sant'Anna in Piazza Armerina
The Church of Sant'Anna in Piazza Armerina stands out for its original octagonal plan.
It was built in the first half of the 18th century, next to the pre-existing Augustinian monastery which is now the university headquarters.
The facade, in Baroque style , has a convex shape and is tripartite by slender pilasters of the Doric order. It is connected to the building structure with diagonal buttresses. The lack of closing elements in these buttresses suggests a different original covering. In fact, it is believed that a dome could originally have been present.
The church, with an octagonal plan, is illuminated from above by a low dome and extended in depth by a long presbytery. There are four rectangular niches surmounted by a round arch.
The interior lacks the original floors, coverings, altars and works of art. Only in the apse is it still possible to notice traces of seventeenth-century frescoes.
