Church of Santa Veneranda in Piazza Armerina
The church of Santa Veneranda in Piazza Armerina is one of the oldest religious buildings in the city.
The first historical sources regarding the church date back to 1299, but it is believed that it was built in the previous century.
The space in front the church has an articulated system of ramps and steps.
The facade, asymmetrical with two pitches, plastered with mouldings, has a central portal in sandstone ashlars with a round arch, surmounted by a flat horizontal strip. Above the portal there is a rectangular window framed by sandstone ashlars.
On the east side stands the rectangular bell tower. The tower, built with blocks of local stone, has a bell loggia open on four sides with a pavilion roof covered with Sicilian tiles.
The interior is entirely plastered and has fine gilding on some frames. Access to the presbytery is through a triumphal arch.
