Convent of Santa Maria di Gesù in Piazza Armerina
The convent of Santa Maria di Gesù in Piazza Armerina is a religious complex in the city.
It was founded in the first half of the 1400s by the Observant Friars Minor, adjacent to the ruins of an ancient Roman village. It was subsequently abandoned until, in 1578, it was occupied by the Reformed Friars Minor.
The current building probably dates back to the sixteenth century. On the front, it has a portico with pillars, once finely frescoed, on which slender monolithic columns support the lowered arches of a large loggia. The side entrance to the church is located under the portico while the ruins of the convent cloister are located at the rear of the church.
