Fountain of the Canals in Piazza Armerina
The Fountain of Canali in Piazza Armerina is the most important fountain with drinking trough in the city and gave its name to one of the four districts that make up the city.
It was built in the second half of the 19th century together with the adjacent wash house.
The water that flows from the fountain comes from the springs located on Mount Doniamare.
The fountain has four channels and in correspondence with each of these there is a mask. There are two interpretations regarding the characters that the masks represent: according to a first interpretation, they portray the faces of the four Dello Spedale brothers who sculpted them; according to another interpretation they portray the four most significant men of the Risorgimento: Giuseppe Mazzini, Camillo Benso Count of Cavour, Vittorio Emanuele II and Giuseppe Garibaldi.
The adjoining wash house has over 20 stations for washing clothes.
