The Palace of the Marquesses of Trigona della Floresta and Barons of San Cono of Piazza Armerina, commonly known as Trigona Palace is one of the most authoritative examples of civil architecture of the Sicilian late Baroque .
It was built in the late seventeenth century and completed in the first half of the eighteenth century.
The plan is rectangular, with an internal courtyard, spread over three floors. The building was built with exposed terracotta bricks and local sandstone, and the north elevation, the one on the Piazza Duomo, is bordered by pilasters with a large portal in the center, balconies with very valuable railings and windows. In the center, on the architrave of the central balcony, there is the frieze symbolizing the family: the golden eagle characterized by a shield with a blue background, a triangle, on the lower left corner, and a comet, at the top right.
The entrance hall leads to the internal courtyard, to the terrani rooms used as warehouses and stables, and to a wide staircase that leads to the main floor. This was paved with precious majolica from Caltagirone, which have been lost and today have been reproduced on the basis of original fragments; the right wing of the main floor consists of two large rooms with ceilings decorated in gold and pastel representing fauna and flora. The first of these rooms contains the family chapel, enclosed inside a large wardrobe with a wooden altar and a reliquary. The building is now home to the Museum of the City and the Territory of Piazza Armerina.
