Church of Carmine in Pietraperzia
The Church of Carmine in Pietraperzia is a Marian church of very ancient origins. The church is known because it houses the crucifix carried in the U Signuri di li fasci procession on Friday Santo.
It was built around 1300 together with the adjoining convent. It was formerly dedicated to the Madonna del Soccorso, when it was entrusted to the Carmelites who came to live in the convent and remained there until 1667, it was dedicated to Santo Carmine.
The simple rectangular façade, closed by two pilasters supporting an entablature, presents a portal surmounted by a rectangular opening. At the top, on the sides, there are two niches.
The interior, with a single nave, preserves works of particular artistic value: the wooden statue of Maria SS. of the Rescue; the wooden statue of S. Biagio; the three altarpieces of the Madonna del Soccorso from the 16th century, of S. Biagio, S. Rocco, S. Agostino and of the Coronation of the Virgin and S. Liborio; a precious wooden crucifix from the 1300s.
