Madonna della Cava Sanctuary in Pietraperzia
The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Cava in Pietraperzia is a place of pilgrimage and great devotion: here the Holy Image of the Madonna found, according to legend, in a quarry in 1223 is venerated.
The church was built around to 1600.
The simple gabled façade is framed by Ionic order pilasters surmounted by an entablature and a slightly overhanging tympanum. In the center there is a portal flanked by two columns which support a broken arched tympanum with the image of the Madonna della Cava in the centre.
Inside the image of the Madonna della Cava dominates which consists of a stone wall in where the image of Modonna in the act of breastfeeding the Baby Jesus is painted. The image is placed on an artistically carved throne covered in pure gold.
Among the works kept in the church, a pedestal of particular artistic value is in alabaster with sculptures by Gagini.
