Necropolis of Piano Cannelle in San Michele di Ganzaria
The Necropolis of Piano Cannelle in San Michele di Ganzaria contains tombs dating back to the Roman imperial age up to the end of the Byzantine age.
It is believed that the necropolis represents only a portion of a larger cemetery area. Downstream from the necropolis, ceramic fragments and some ruins were found which testify to the presence of an ancient settlement.
The necropolis appears to be made up of rectangular earthen pit tombs closed by large slabs of local limestone. There are also, in smaller numbers, tombs made up of small rectangular aedicules, made with stone and mortar, which are accessed through a small door on one of the short sides.
