The Carnival in Mezzojuso is famous for the pantomime of Mastro Campo.
It is a re-enactment of a historical event: the assault that the Count of Modica made to the Castle to conquer Queen Bianca of Navarre.
The representation sees Mastro di Campo as protagonists, with a red mask with an enormous nose, and the King in conquering the heart of the Queen. Hundreds of characters in fifteenth-century clothes line up for one or the other contender in a surreal atmosphere that evokes ancient Sicilian rural traditions. Cannon shots, candy launches and the intervention of the Garibaldians fill this very colorful page of folklore unique in its kind throughout the national territory.
