Carnival in Francavilla di Sicilia 2024

Every year in Francavilla di Sicilia there is what is defined as the most beautiful Carnival in the Alcantara Valley and is probably one of the oldest in all of eastern Sicily as it has been taking place for more than a century now. It is a party that is characterized by its dancing balls and above all by its irony and transgressiveness and the evident erotic meaning of its symbols.
The days of celebration are characterized by dancing balls: a stretch of Via Vittorio Emanuele is transforms into a grand ballroom. The balls end with the characteristic Fasuledda, a music composed by a young and unknown Francavillese, which is danced in circles following the speed of the music that is alternating. They are also characterized by the so-called mmutticedde, that is to say the light thrusts that people give their backs while dancing in a circle. A wagon with King Carnival is followed by a funeral procession made up of whiners and widows that crosses the main streets of the center accompanied by the musical band. King Carnevale gives the last farewell with a sausage in his hand to indicate that after that evening Lent begins and therefore one can no longer eat meat. But the sausage also has another meaning, the "phallic" one, on this occasion, in fact, along the main street of the town, the colorful banners of the "baccalaro", the "sausage", the "provola" and the " ace of clubs ”, clearly alluding to the intimate attributes of both sexes.
