Carnival in San Cono

The Carnival of San Cono is famous for the Carrivalata di San Cono.
It is a characteristic itinerant theatrical representation on horseback that takes place on Carnival Sunday.
In the carrivalata the men on horseback recite texts in dialectal verses that narrate the allegories on the trades, costumes, and on the customs of the peasant world.
The carrivalate originate from the profane representations that took place throughout Italy during propitiation rites and secular celebrations. They survive in the village thanks to the notable presence of dialect poets who have continued this literary genre, typical of popular art.
