Sanfratellano Carnival

The San Fratello Carnival is a festival full of tradition and fun.
The San Fratella Carnival has its traditional masks which testify to the ancient origins of this festival: the craftsmen who wear colorful clothes and have their faces painted with black and vermilion stripes; the monks with a long beard, a bag full of oranges and vegetables, and holding strange devotional books in their hands; the singing poets who performed verses with musical accompaniment that told, with irony, local news events that occurred in the past year; u scalittaru (i.e. the man with the ladder), dressed in elegant clothes and holding a basket with oranges, lemons and a travel bag full of sugared almonds to give to the girls who watched them from the balconies . To reach the balcony from which the girls looked out they used their ladder, hence the name scalittaru.
Today the San Fratello carnival includes parades of allegorical floats and masked groups and the large and fun evening in the square during which prizes are awarded for the most original mask of adults and children and the funniest mask.
