Theophany at Palazzo Adriano
On the day of the Epiphany, a particular Byzantine ceremony takes place in Palazzo Adriano. The Theophany is commemorated, i.e. the manifestation of the divinity of Christ on the occasion of the baptism in the Jordan River.
The ceremony takes place in Piazza Umberto I near the octagonal fountain from 1608 and begins with the blessing of the waters by the priest. The evocative ceremony then involves the descent, along a thread that runs from the bell tower of the church to the fountain, of a dove tied with a red ribbon symbolizing the Holy Spirit.
The celebration ends with the distribution of the blessed oranges which are artistically arranged on the fountain.
