Feast of the Ascension - Palio of Floridia

The Feast of the Ascension in Floridia takes place in the month of May and is known for the historic Horse Palio of Floridia.
During the week of the Ascension, a in fact takes place bareback horse racingalong the main street of the town and the traditional blessing of the horses which takes place in the churchyard of the Mother Church. This is an ancient tradition: it is known that already in 1461 in the month of May a festival took place in Floridia which had its playful and spectacular point of reference in the horse.
The Floridia horse race is one of the very few that have survived in Italy in the original bareback racing version. In recent years the race has also reached high technical standards.
