Feast of San Fortunato in Pantelleria
On the island of Pantelleria, on October 16 usually there are celebrations in honor of San Fortunato, proclaimed patron saint of Pantelleria because some miraculous interventions have been attributed to him: in 1831, on the occasion of an earthquake, and in 1891 on the occasion of a tsunami.
During the celebrations, the procession, by land and by sea, of the simulacrum of the Saint takes place.
Particularly impressive is the ceremony by sea when the statue of the saint is carried in procession on a boat followed by those of the inhabitants of the island. Holy Mass is also celebrated at sea.
Before the boats return to the port, it is customary that wreaths of flowers are thrown into the sea.
