Feast of Santa Maria di Salina
On the island of Salina, in Santa Marina on July the celebrations in honor of Santa Marina take place. The festival opens with the traditional competition of "A 'ntinna a mari", or "antenna in the sea", a sort of greasy pole made to protrude over the waters of the port at the top of which a flag is placed to be conquered with the effigy of the Santa. This is followed by the procession of the statue of the Patron Saint carried on the shoulders of the faithful along every street in the town. The procession ends with the celebration of the Holy Mass. The notes of the historic "Isola Verde" band cheer up the final evening which ends at midnight with the explosion of the classic fireworks.
