Festa di San Sebastiano a Palazzolo Acreide
Lorenzo Di Iulio - CC4.0
The Feast of San Sebastiano in Palazzolo Acreide, protector of the town, takes place on January 20 and is then repeated on August 10 of each year when the great summer party takes place on the occasion of which religious rites alternate with cultural and folkloristic events.
On the eve of the party, 9 August, the gala tour and the "unveiling" of the seventeenth-century simulacrum take place.
10 August the celebrations begin at 8.15 with 21 shots fired a cannon followed by the procession through the streets of the village of the Carro del Pane which proceeds to the traditional collection of "cuddure", the donuts of bread, offered by the faithful to San Sebastiano. The blessing of the votive cuddures and of the laurel follows.
The culminating moment of the festival is the evocative "sciuta", or rather "exit", of the relic and simulacrum of San Sebastiano, welcomed by the people in celebration, from the launch of ' nzareddi, that is strips of paper, colored by the shooting of bombs and the sound of the musical band. At 13 o'clock the procession that runs through the streets of the inhabited center begins and at the passage of the simulacrum the traditional offering of "naked children" takes place, in which the stripped children are lifted onto the cart to be exposed to the saint. Another characteristic moment of the procession is the exciting "Catena Umana" along the ascent of via Fiumegrande.
On August 17, the day of the eighth, at the end of the Solemn Mass there is a second evening procession of the reliquary and the simulacrum of San Sebastiano on the "vara".
