Feast of Maria SS. Assunta in Tusa
The Feast of Maria SS. Assunta in Tusa is the patronal feast of the city and takes place every year on August 15th.
The festivities traditionally begin on August 13th with the solemn procession of the Dead Madonna, the Dormition , during which the simulacrum of the Virgin is placed on a coffin made of rushes and carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic centre.
On the eve of the festival, August 14, the traditional Acchianata by Madonna. It is an ancient scenic representation of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven, whose origin is to be placed around the end of the seventeenth century, which takes place every year in the Mother Church: the simulacrum of the Virgin, through a device, once manual , today electric, is carried up simulating the ascension of the Virgin. The Simulacrum moves against a background with a sky painted with angels and various canvases that create an extremely suggestive light/shadow effect.
The traditional historical ride and, in the evening, the solemn procession of the Simulacrum of Maria SS. Assumed into Heaven. At the end of the Procession, there is once again the scenic representation of the Acchianata da Madonna.
During the celebrations in honor of the Assumption of the Madonna, musical, folkloristic and entertainment shows are organised.
