Feast of the Madonna del Terzito in Salina
The celebrations in honor of the Madonna del Terzito take place at the Valdichiesa Sanctuary on 23 July.
According to tradition, the sanctuary stands in the place where the Virgin appeared to a woodcutter, Alfonso Mercorella, who was then addressed by the triple sound of a bell, he found among the ruins of an old building, an ancient wooden picture that depicted the Madonna with the same appearance as the vision he had just before.
Since then, every year, on the same date as the discovery of the sacred image, carries out the feast in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Terzito. The civil and military authorities of the Aeolian Islands take part in the solemn pontifical and in the procession with the Venerated Simulacrum embellished with jewels offered by believers for graces received and as always the numerous faithful from the 26 parishes of the Archipelago, the many Aeolians of Australia and of America and vacationers.
