Feast of the Madonna dell'Alto in Petralia Sottana

The Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Alto in Petralia Sottana is a common pilgrimage destination. Every year on August 14th a suggestive night torchlight procession takes place, while on August 15th, at noon, the festival in honor of the Madonna dell'Alto . At the cry of "Ludamu e grazieiamu u Santissimu Sacramientu" followed by "Evviva Maria" with the statue of the Madonna dell'Alto, attributed to the art of Domenico Gaggini, a processional procession takes place around the Sanctuary where the blessing of the fields and of the inhabited Madonites. At the end of the religious services follows the country festival, a "schiticchiata" during which, with joy and lightheartedness, the pilgrims consume the traditional rural banquet.
