Feast of Madonna della Favara in Contessa Entellina
The Madonna della Favara Festival, patron saint of the city of Contessa Entellina, takes place every year on 8 September.
The celebrations begin at the end of August with the preparation octave which takes place in the church of Maria SS. della Favara which is celebrated by the clergy of the Roman rite.
On the eve of the feast, in the afternoon, solemn vespers are celebrated in the Byzantine rite.
On 8 September, the festivities begin with a tour of the musical band through the streets of the town and the Eucharistic celebration in the Roman rite. The traditional procession follows, which sees the religious authorities of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi and the faithful reach the Church of the Madonna della Favara, to attend the Pontifical of the Byzantine rite celebrated by the Bishop. In the afternoon there is the celebration of the Mass in the Roman rite followed, in the evening, by the procession of the statue of the Madonna placed on the vara. The vara is carried on the shoulders of the bearers, crosses the city streets and, along the way, makes several stops to allow the bearers to rest. It ends in the late evening with the usual fireworks display.
The festivities end the following day, 9 September, with the celebration of the thanksgiving mass and with the traditional Contessa Entellina fair and entertainment show.
