Feast of Madonna della Mercede al Capo in Palermo
In the Capo district of Palermo, the celebrations in honor of the Madonna della Mercede take place on the last Sunday of September. The most awaited moment of the celebrations is the procession of the statue of the Madonna through the streets of the neighborhood. The procession begins with "a scinnuta ra Maronna", that is the "descent of the Madonna", when the statue is made to descend along the narrow staircase that connects the raised part of the square with the street level, and thus reaches the crowd of the faithful. Another suggestive moment is "a vulata i l'ancili", that is the "flight of the angels", during which two children dressed as angels and suspended from ropes meet on the head of the Madonna reciting poems and throwing flower petals.
