Feast of Maria Regina degli Angeli in Mineo
In Mineo, every year, on the last Saturday of the month of May, the feast of the Madonna Regina degli Angeli is celebrated. On the occasion of the festivities, an evening procession takes place during which the simulacrum of the Virgin is carried on the shoulders through the streets of the city. The procession is very suggestive: the devotees walk barefoot up very steep climbs, the brotherhoods accompany the simulacrum together with the city authorities and the faithful who invoke in her name.
The statue of the Queen of Angels, made of alabaster, was donated by Count Ruggero in 1072. The Virgin is represented with a slender and composed body, covered by a wavy dress and mantle, with a youthful and benevolent face and penetrating eyes, surrounded by ringed hair that falls flowing behind her shoulders and supports in the left arm the child.
The name of royal was attributed to the Virgin following the events that took place in 1643: King Philip IV, following a grace received from the Virgin, asked the Holy See that the Most Holy Virgin be proclaimed patroness in all the municipalities of her kingdoms. Since in Mineo the cult of the virgin and martyr Agrippina was deeply felt, it was decided to keep Saint Agrippina as Patroness of Mineo and the Holy Virgin was given the name of royal since she could not be proclaimed patron saint.
