Festa Maria SS Addolorata a Comiso
In Comiso, from the second to the third Sunday of May, the celebrations in honor of Maria SS. Sorrowful. For the entire duration of the Septenary, the High Altar of the Mother Church remains veiled by a fine filet curtain embroidered in 1928.
The celebrations begin with the traditional "Dinner" which takes place on the second Sunday of May. The "Dinner" consists of a traditional collection of gifts: in some places in the streets of the center, tables called "dinners" are set up where the gifts offered by the faithful are placed. The collection of these gifts, to respect tradition, is also carried out with Sicilian carts. The collected gifts are finally placed in the churchyard and are sold in the evening auction, the proceeds of which are donated to charity. .
On Saturday there is the procession "A piddiata ro mantu", that is a procession from the Church of San Biagio to the Mother Church with the precious midnight blue velvet cloak that wraps the simulacrum, the sword, the halo and the handkerchief that the Madonna holds her hands.
In the afternoon of the feast day the "unveiled" is held: the curtain that covers the main altar of the Mother Church is withdrawn, and the eighteenth-century simulacrum of Our Lady of Sorrows appears. This is then placed in an ancient wooden fercolo and taken to the adjacent Piazza Fonte Diana, on whose stage the children's choir sings the Hymn to the Addolorata. Then the procession takes place along the city streets, at the end of which a fireworks display follows.
