Feast of Maria SS Annunziata in Geraci

The feast of Maria SS Annunziata, co-patroness of Geraci Siculo, occurs, according to the liturgical calendar, on March 25, but by ancient tradition in Geraci Siculo the celebrations take place on the second Sunday of July.
The festival takes place on the afternoon of Sunday. After the solemn Mass, celebrated in the Mother Church, the canvas of the Annunciation, which dominates inside the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Geraci, is placed on a special "Vara" parade with flowers that adorn it and illuminated by tiny lights placed around the frame.
In the early afternoon the procession begins which will carry the precious canvas along the streets of the historic center of the country.At the end of the procession the canvas is taken back to the Mother Church.
