In Piazza Armerina, the feast of Maria SS di Piazza Vecchia takes place on May 3, in honor of the patroness Madonna delle Vittorie. On this day we celebrate the discovery of a Byzantine icon with the effigy of the Madonna delle Vittorie which was found near today's Sanctuary in Piazza Vecchia and to which the miracle of the cessation of the plague that was affecting the population is attributed. br> According to tradition, the last Sunday of April the icon of Maria SS. of Piazza Vecchia is carried in procession from the Sanctuary of Piazza Vecchia to the Church of the Guardian Angels. On May 3, the icon is carried again in procession and brought back to the Sanctuary. On the occasion of the celebrations, folkloristic shows and the traditional game of the greasy tree are organized.
