Feast of San Biagio in Comiso
The Feast of San Biagio in Comiso, the patron saint of the town, is celebrated every year in January, on February 3, the day of the liturgical feast, and on the second Sunday of July with a large patronal feast.
In January it is carries out the procession of the simulacrum of San Biagio on the occasion of the solemnity of the dedication of the Mother Church and as a gesture of commemoration of the deceased of the terrible earthquake of 11 January 1693.
The liturgical feast of February 3 strong> commemorates the martyrdom of the Saint. On the occasion of this day, at the end of every religious celebration, the traditional throat blessing takes place during which two crossed candles are placed on the neck of the devotees.
In July, the great patronal festival takes place with a busy religious program which culminates with the solemn procession of the fercolo on which the simulacrum of San Biagio is placed.
Among the most characteristic and significant moments of the patronal feast is the traditional harvest of wheat with Sicilian carts and the auction of blessed bread and grapes.
