Feast of San Giuseppe in Castelvetrano

On the Feast of San Giuseppe in Castelvetrano, celebrated on 18 and 19 March, bread, a symbol of abundance, becomes the protagonist of the traditional Altars of San Giuseppe, where cakes and loaves dedicated to the saint are displayed and sold, as well as typical local products. During the festival, the ancient ritual of the procession di li Virgineddi, or of the Virgins, takes place, knocking on the door of the houses where they are set up the altars. There is also a procession of the ancient cart decorated with loaves of bread and myrtle. What makes these processions very suggestive is the fact that the blankets of the brides' trousseau are displayed on the balconies of private houses, an ancient tradition once very much felt throughout Sicily.
