Every year in Leonforte on March on the occasion of the feast of San Giuseppe, the characteristic "Altars of San Giuseppe" are set up. It is a very old tradition dating back to about 400 years ago. The Altars of San Giuseppe consist of large tables scattered throughout the municipal territory that are visited all night until the first light of dawn by the many travelers who arrive in the city.
The altars or tables are set up by those who has "made a vow" and consist of a large table set as well as of bread worked in very particular shapes, known as the "cuddure", also of the most disparate foods, first fruits, drinks, sweets.
You can also attend the recitation of the raziuneddi: dialectal prayers that narrate the life of Jesus, usually recited by children who in this way will earn the "pupiddi", loaves of bread to be worn around the neck held together by a string.
The concluding ceremony take place with the participation of the saints to whom the food will be distributed on the altar. Once the figures who had to represent the saints were chosen from among the most destitute families to give them food to be sustained for a few weeks and the architect of the altar to fulfill the vow made. During the ceremony, the saint was distributed a set of food consisting of a portion or plate of everything, but not before the master of the house, with a rite that vaguely recalls that of the last supper, has provided them with lavender and a kiss. of the feet.
