Feast of San Mauro in Viagrande
Every year, on January 15th in Viagrande, the solemn celebrations of the patron saint San Mauro Abate take place.
The feast begins on the day before, January 14th, with the transfer of the Patron Saint's Artistic Fercolo from the "Casa ' a vara "to the Mother Church, accompanied by the Committees and the band body. The wax offering and the procession of the relic of the patron saint follows. The most folkloristic moment of the festival is the so-called "party entrance", that of Santa Caterina and that of Scalatelli, with the performance of the ancient cantatas of the two districts. The day ends with a grandiose fireworks competition: the two parties thus compete to offer the best fireworks display.
On January 15th, at 13 o'clock, the triumphal exit of the simulacrum of the Saint takes place accompanied by a grandiose fireworks display, follows the procession through the city streets where the Saint is accompanied by the devout faithful and by the bands. When the fercolo reaches Piazza San Mauro the traditional "Calata dell'Angelo" takes place: a wooden angel is made to come down from a canopy holding flowers and banknotes that he will give to the Saint.
The Sunday following the party is the final day of the celebrations: the Patron Saint, in the afternoon, is carried in procession and brought back to the Mother Church where the traditional cantata to the Patron Saint is performed. The party ends with the closing of the simulacrum of the patron saint in the chapel.
